Don't give to get

I was browsing through different blogs and came across this awesome blog which mentioned about giving to get.

There is a story about two brothers, which the first brother gave the second brother many presents on Christmas Day while the second brother gave the first a gift from the heart - a photo with both of them together. The first brother was pretty upset since he expected to get more gifts in return.

This of course does not only apply to Christmas times when we exchange presents but applies to many areas. There are times people share things with friends so that their friends would like them more; there are times when people chat with each other just to build up connections; there are people that offer help because they want to be helped in return.

All these kind of things are giving to get. I often question myself - "Why am I doing this?", "Is it for myself or really for others?" Sometimes I get the answer, sometimes I don't. I don't want to lie to you, there are times I feel like I'm giving to get, though when I do community services I'm usually not expecting anything in return.

"Generosity is measured by what motivates you to give"

It is often easy to give but it is hard to make sure you are doing it with the right purpose. It is hard to ensure you yourself are really trying to help instead of gain something (even if it's just a little) in return.

As this new year starts, I will keep on questioning my motive behind everything I do and hopefully, I can transform myself into a better person.

  1. I can't remember the exact wording, but I've seen several quotes along the lines of true helping/giving being when you do something for someone who can NEVER repay you. This post sort of reminded me of that.

    1. I'm glad it reminded you of something! I do think we all should learn to give without asking for anything in return. It would be really hard for us to always keep track of how much we got in return!

  2. Good thoughts also a good read. Giving is very important to our own well being. I enjoy the smiles in return. There is something I try to practice daily, along with a smile, give someone you do not know a compliment. Smiles are contageous. Nice visit here.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes indeed it is important for us! We cannot expect everyone to give back things to us because there are so many people in need out there! It is always a pleasure to see peoples' smiles though!

  4. Often when you do something for others it comes back two fold. In your heart and in the heart of those who you helped. Just feeling good about a experience, thought or cause is one of the best presents we can ever have. I give happiness to others and hope for a smile in return. A smile can say a thousand words, and will be remembered by those who offered it for a lifetime.

    1. Yes that is so true! I just want to feel good everyday and sleep well everyday. I don't want to treat others badly and regret afterwards. Yes, I enjoy seeing others smile too as it brightens my day! Have a great day and God bless!

  7. I have read this post, and all your previous posts. You have deep insights about life. How true it is that generosity is measured by what motivates you to give. There are people who give in order to impress others, and then again there are those who pass on their "cabinet junk" to others simply to get rid of stuff. Indeed true generosity sees the need, and gives knowing that the other could never pay it back. Exactly what God did in giving His Son Jesus as our redeemer. As 2015 starts may we be truly generous in what we do for others!

    1. Wow that's really nice of you! I didn't expect people to read all my posts really! Thank you so much! Yes, I was actually inspired by a blog I came past! I do question myself if I was doing things the right way since there are many temptations. Also, I felt like I should learn to be a better and selfless person. It would be a hard life if I gave just for the things that return! Good point! I've never thought of the example of God! Yes! I hope you have an awesome 2015!
